Mya Owens has always dreamed of raising a family in a safe and loving environment. Soon, she will have the opportunity to become a homeowner for the first time. “I am so excited! This has been a long journey, but I am glad everything has worked out,” she said. Mya currently lives with her two boys Braylen (8 yr) and Matthias (6 mo) and is their primary caregiver.
Born and raised in Florence, Alabama, Mya Owens is very familiar to this city, but her journey has not been an easy one. “Raising two boys as a single mother working multiple jobs has been difficult,” she admits. Mya’s journey began with her work at North American Title Loans where she developed communication and management skills. This led to her finding employment as a crew member at Burger King. Mya’s perseverance led to her working her way up to the Assistant Manager position and finally the General Manager position of Burger King.
Mya claims that her work ethic has been beneficial in her finding opportunities. She demonstrates that hard work can allow you to overcome obstacles and can lead you to finding success. She claims that her management positions taught her the importance of being understanding and having sympathy for others because “you never know what someone is dealing with or going through”.
Mya discovered Shoals Habitat for Humanity by visiting the ReStore location. After touring the office and meeting the staff, she knew she wanted to be a part of a team that helps others. Mya is excited to partake in building her first home. She looks forward to assisting the staff at the ReStore and helping others obtain their dreams of becoming homeowners as well. In addition to volunteering at Shoals Habitat, Mya works with Hellen Keller Hospital and helps with the W.C. Handy Festival.
When Mya is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family. Her hobbies include singing, going to the park, and cooking.
